Leaping Bytes Needs You !!!

To make AlmostVPN 1.0 the best SSH Tunnel Manager in the universe, Leaping Bytes needs YOU to use it every day and complain loudly each time something does not work the way you want it to work.

The only problem we can not fix is the one no one complains about!!!

AlmostVPN/PRO Version RC1 Release Notes

What is New

  • This version implements last big missing feature - support for tunneling via proxy (SOCKS/HTTP) (Ticket #176).
  • Functionality similar to "test account" were implemented. There is no button, but there is a status light with tooltip.
  • Starting from RC1 AlmostVPN/PRO gets packaged the same way as 0.9 used to be packaged - compressed DMG file.
  • Uninstall and Cleanup applications were added to distribution

What Was Fixed Since Beta 7

  1. TIcket #176. Support for tunneling via proxy
  2. The whole lot of bugs was fixed in ad-hoc way (without opening a ticket).

What does not work

It looks like AlmostVPN does not work very well in situations when you trying to connect to server you never connected before. As a "work around", you can SSH to such server via command line. Once you were able to connect to the server via command line, AlmostVPN should be OK. This problem tracked with Ticket #211

What about Panther

AlmostVPN 1.0 will not work with Panther. Unless bunch of people will complain about it, AlmostVPN will not be ported to Panther any time soon. Sorry folks, but with Leopard right around the corner it is about time to adopt Tiger

According to Omnigroup less then 3% people still use Panther.

What about NFS

Unfortunately, Apple is lagging with adoption of NFS v 4.0 protocol (which can run over single TCP port). So AlmostVPN will not be able to support NFS until one of two things happen:

  • Apple adopt NFS v 4.0 (which might happen with introduction of Leopard),
  • AlmostVPN v 1.5.x will become available (which will introduce "real"-VPN functionality. I am 85% sure that what I plan for 1.5 will allow to use NFS, but we will not know for sure until we try).
