Version 2.4 is almost ready to go into beta testing, so I think it is appropriate time to "spread the word" about new and exciting features it will bring to MapPocket.  Besides usual "minor usability improvements" and "major bug fixes"  v.2.4 will introduce 3 new features:

  • Chinese localization,
  • GPS Tracking,
  • Map Language selector.

Chinese localization

As we all know, Jan 13th is going to be a big day for our Chinese friends.  iPhone will become available to many millions of people of the People's Republic of China. I am sure that many (if not most) of these people do speak English, but some of them may be pleasantly surprised to find an app that speaks Chinese (both traditional and simplified).

This short video demonstrates GPS Tracking in action!

GPS Tracking

MapPocket provided access to GPS since the very first version.  However, this functionality was somewhat simplistic.  All you could do is to ask MapPocket to place a blue dot on the map at your current location.  Considering the fact that MapPocket was conceived as an app for people who walk around a lot, this was certainly not enough.  Version 2.4 fixes this.  Push and hold (as opposite to touch) GPS button to toggle GPS Tracking mode.  When GPS Tracking is ON, "you are here" dot gets updated continuously with your current GPS location. As an extra bonus, when GPS Tracking is ON MapPocket will show distance, average speed and altitude. GPS Tracking works the same way on-line and off-line.

Map Language selector

While thinking about localization, I have discovered that Google Maps can talk in different languages. I am not sure how useful this is going to be, but as of v.2.4 you can select which language to use.

NOTE: Not all languages supported by Google, so your mileage may vary depending on the language and location you looking at.
